Also cultural norms, familiar background knowledge - I imagine the unknown knowns can cause many problems when interacting with people who don't know them, for example.

excellent point, tnx R! ... the intercultural differences in "personal space" come to mind, as do hand gestures (pointing with a finger versus indicating with a spread palm), eye contact, etc.
